Youth Development Center

Purpose:
Offer ten weeks of computer training, wellness/nutrition or swim/water safety programs to each child in Plainfield, preschool through sixth grade.

Goals:

• Reduce childhood obesity in Plainfield.
• Teach each child in Plainfield to swim or increase swimming skills.
• Provide each child in Plainfield with access to a computer; educate in computer skills.

Process:
Children will participate in a 1 hour class per week for 9 weeks. Groups can choose to participate in a 9 week Wellness/Nutrition Session, Swim/Water Safety Session, or Computer Session. Sessions will be offered September through June, Monday-Friday from 9am-2pm. Class size will be limited to 30 children and must be accompanied by 2 agency or school staff.

Curriculum outline:
Wellness/Nutrition (Preschool/kindergarten & 1st-6th grade)

• 45 minute movement education program– CATCH Program
• 15 minute healthy food identification program
• CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) is an evidence-based, coordinated school health program designed to promote physical activity and healthy food choices, & prevent tobacco use in children from preschool through grade 8. By teaching children that eating healthy and being physically active every day can be FUN, the CATCH Program has proven that establishing healthy habits in childhood can promote behavior changes that can last a lifetime

Water safety (Preschool through 6th grade)
One hour learn to swim and/or progressive swim program

To put YMCA principles and core values into practice through aquatics programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. To expose children to teamwork, dedication, and the importance of setting goals through participation in swim classes and water safety.

Computers
One hour computer class- Club Tech program

Club Tech is a national program that makes technology, software
and training accessible to children. Club Tech teaches youth
essential digital literacy skills through fun, interactive lessons.

Partnership Expectation:
We request that all agency and school participants agree to a partnership with the Plainfield Area YMCA. This partnership enables the Plainfield Area YMCA to apply for grants and additional funding on behalf of this collaboration to cover the costs of providing these services to the children of Plainfield.
